Video: Cast Audition Medley Part 2

Spring Awakening Tour: Audition Cut Medley - Part 2

It's Part 2 of our video from the Spring It On Rochester cabaret. Both Christy Altomare and Kimiko Glenn auditioned with a rendition of "River" by Jonie Mitchell while Taylor Trensch keeps it in the SA family of tunes with "Left Behind." Krystina Alabado takes it back to contemporary with Michelle Branch's "Everywhere" and Ben Fankhauser sings "On The Way Down" by Ryan Cabrera and Steffi D ends the medley with a song from a fellow Canadian, "Angel", by Sarah McLachlan. Leave comments below, and if you've ever auditioned for Spring Awakening before, let the community know what song you chose. Enjoy!

Exclusive Video: Cast's Audition Songs

Exclusive Video: Cast's Audition Songs

Many of you have or will audition for Spring Awakening. Over the years, we've fielded literally hundreds of questions from you about appropriate audition songs for Spring Awakening. The creatives always state they prefer an alternative rock/folk song and not musical theatre songs, but as you can see in this video from the Rochester Cabaret at Method Machine a few weeks ago, that rule comes with some exceptions. In the end, the song that shows off what you can do well and the song that you have a strong personal connection to will serve you best. What songs did the touring cast audition with? We'll do better than tell you. We'll show you.

Rochester Cabaret: Spring It On planned by Sarah Hunt and Anthony Lee Medina, hosted by Steffi D and Taylor Trensch. Thanks to Krystina Alabado for this two part video:

Justin Scott Brown wasted no time in getting some distinctive Hartford food options: "Woody's Foot Long Hotdogs hitting the spot after Spartacus and boot camp this morning. 1st Hartford 'Man v. Food' stop...check."

Fan Friday: Schenectady Guilty Ones painting a car!

Our fans show their dedication in so many ways. In today's post, we feature what the Guilty Ones in Schenectady have been doing to get the word out before we came into town this week. Painting banners, creating and distributing Spring Awakening tattoos, passing out flyers, and more. But perhaps no act shows their dedication more than being willing to withstand sub zero temperatures to paint their car! Thank you Alyssa Wells, Hannah Fettinger and all the Schenectady Guilty Ones for all their hard work. If you see this car driving around town, make sure to give a honk! And come see the show at Proctors-you only have one more weekend!

Spring Awakening in Schenectady, NY!

We're in the Capital District this week! Had some problems getting here due to the snow, but it sure is breathtaking here in upstate NY. Krystina Alabado tweeted: "has never seen snow like this in her whole life. It is so incredibly beautiful!!!" The cast's connection to the area includes David Breitbarth, our Adult Men understudy, going to school at nearby Hamilton College.

We had to say goodbye to our musical director, Jared Stein, who has been with us since the start of the tour. Kristen Lee Rosenfeld has stepped up to the plate and she rocks! You can listen to one of her original songs on Lucas' YouTube channel (linked in the callout for his Profile of the Month below). Charity Wicks (who did our show on Broadway) steps in as associate conductor. Here's a picture of our awesome band at Jared's going away party two weeks ago. So much love:

Goodbye Jared!

DID YOU KNOW? Schenectady was originally inhabited by Mohawk Indians. They called the settlement "Schau-naugh-ta-da," which meant "over the pine plains.

SCHENECTADY GAZETTE A rave! "In front of a truly enthusiastic audience on Tuesday night, the Tony Award-winning rock musical “Spring Awakening” charged onto the stage at Proctors, providing theatergoers a magnificent production of a provocative and daring modern musical." http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2010/feb/18/0218_spawreview/

Next Profile of the Month: Lucas Wells!

You voted, and watching the poll results come in was as suspenseful as anything we saw on the Winter Olympics (for us, at least LOL). Lucas Wells received a huge surge in the last few days of voting, edging out the competition in a tight race and winning by a margin of only 10 votes. What prompted this surge? Perhaps word spread that when he covered Ernst last week in Rochester, Lucas became the only person in Spring Awakening history to have played ALL the male roles (except, of course, for the Adult Men)!! Or perhaps because Lucas did some smart politicking of his own by posting his and Krystina's sweet performance at the Rochester Cabaret on his YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajt_ZIC0rLU Or perhaps it's just his lovable personality. Whatever the reason, the community has spoken!

Leave your question for Lucas in the comment section below. Questions are due by next Monday, 2/22 at 6 pm.

If you're planning on creating a playlist or burning a CD for your loved one, here are some songs you should consider. Feel free to share and embed this playlist. Let us know what you think of the company's selections. Did we turn you on to a new singer? Do you share the same musical taste as one of the cast members? Share YOUR favorite song with us. "I'd Give it All for You" -Songs for a New World (not available)

Pinky Weitzman: Shares a love song from her band, Not Waving But Drowning. The lyrics are killer:

There're birds erupting
Flying from my chest
And when I burn to nothing
There'll be nothing left

And then I will be free
Of all these useless dreams
And all I have to do
Is burn alive without you

Spring Awakening Makes a Wish Come True

Curtain Call for Wish Child Jesse!

ROCHESTER, NY (Feb. 10, 2010) – Wish child Jesse Pardee, an eighteen-year-old from Camillus, NY diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, will be performing in the Spring Awakening national tour during the Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13 performances at the Rochester Auditorium Theatre.

Pardee’s original wish was to audition for the Spring Awakening national tour. This wish was fulfilled on January 20, 2010 in NYC when she auditioned in front of the Spring Awakening creative team, which included the director, Michael Mayer, the music supervisor, Kimberly Grigsby, and the associate choreographer, JoAnn Hunter. The team was so impressed with her talent and personality that they invited her to perform in Rochester as part of her wish experience.
During the evening performance on Friday, February 12 and the matinee and evening performances on Saturday, February 13, Pardee will be performing as part of the ensemble in the “chair of rock” role.
Spring Awakening, the 8-time Tony Award® winning Broadway musical, is based on the 1891 Frank Wedekind play of the same name, and features an electrifying score by Duncan Sheik, book and lyrics by Steven Sater, direction by Michael Mayer, and choreography by the award-winning Bill T. Jones.

Set against the backdrop of a repressive and provincial late 19th century Germany, Spring Awakening tells the timeless story of adolescent self-discovery and budding sexuality as seen through the eyes of three teenagers. Haunting and provocative, Spring Awakening celebrates an unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with a power, a poignancy and a passion you will never forget. For more details about Spring Awakening visit SpringAwakening.com.

Tickets for Spring Awakening at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester are available at www.ticketmaster.com, 800.745.3000 and at the Auditorium Theatre Box Office.

Please join us share in the power of a wish as Jesse’s wish comes true!

New Video: How Spring Awakening Celebrates Birthdays on the Road

Spring Awakening Tour: Behind the Scenes - Bdays On The Road

What do SA cast members do on their birthday when on the road? Steffi D celebrated
her 20th in Boston with a pink tutu and Krystina has practically grown up on the
road from ages 18-20. Back in Cincinnati, we celebrated Kayla Foster's Birthday with 2 cakes and a wonderfully tuned and melodically perfect rendition of "Happy Birthday to You." Thanks to Krystina for creating this vid. Enjoy!

Spring Awakening in Rochester, NY!

We're back on the east coast for three engagements! For all our fans on Broadway who have been missing the show--time to make travel plans and get your tickets now for Rochester, Schenectady and Hartford!

The winter storm that hit the east coast messed up our travel plans to Rochester and the cast was forced to split into two travel groups. This created a friendly (or not so friendly) war of words on Twitter between cast members in Group 1 and 2.

Chase Davidson: Group one is way more skinny and talented than group two. We flew on lady gaga's private jet that served chipotle and coldstone...and gold.

Just to further reinforce their fabulosity, Ben Fankhauser tweeted this picture of Group one's hair teasing party in Rochester:

Hair Teasing Party!

REVIEWS

DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE: "Frankly, I didn't know what to expect from the musical, and wondered how Rochester Broadway Theatre League patrons would view a controversial production that makes Rent and Avenue Q seem tame by comparison.
The overall consensus was "dark but beautiful" — and I had to agree." I would rate this play R for real. Yes, it's provocative, but its growing pains have heart. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20102110330

ROCHESTER CITY NEWSPAPER: A rave! " Of course, it helps to have a fantastic cast bringing the songs and words to life. Altomare and Epstein lead a great group of young actors (and older ones - Angela Reed and John Wojda do excellent work bringing to life a variety of adult roles in the play). The tiny Altomare has a piercing, haunting soprano voice, and even her most difficult melodic passes seem totally effortless. Epstein is commanding in his lower register and slides through his many falsetto portions with expert precision. Other stand-outs include Taylor Trensch, who balances terror, rage, anxiety, and despair as poor, doomed Moritz; "Canadian Idol" star Steffi D as sweet-voiced outcast Ilse; and Andy Mientus, who capitalizes on every moment of the fairly minor character of Hanschen to deliver some of the night's funniest, sexiest moments." http://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/entertainment/stage/2010/02/THEATER-REVIEW-RBTLs-Spring-Awakening/

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER A rave! And great notices for our Melchoir understudy and hometown boy Matt Shingledecker:

"Awakening is bold and bracing" By Lawrence Toppman

"Any students in this group who reached adulthood would be in their late 50s when Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany in 1933. Could Mayer and Jones be implying that, when someone in power stamps down individuals and demands unthinking obedience to authority, the Nazi Party is the likely result?"

(The answer to your question, Mr. Toppman, is yes! That's exactly what we mean to imply. Andy's hair ain't blond fer nothin'. Very astute).

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Interview with Duncan Shiek: talking about his high school experience, ""I wasn't one of the popular kids, but not unpopular - kind of on my own track. There's always a huge amount of angst about who you are, what's cool and what's not, so there are roiling emotions." http://www.charlotteobserver.com/312/story/1211030.html

QNOTES (reprinted from SeattleGayScene) " Spring Awakening proves why it’s Broadway’s best musical... not only connects with a younger crowd but is highly entertaining for both young and old audiences alike. This show is so rocking that you cannot help but love it. Literally, I have to say that this is one of the best shows I have seen on stage in a long time..."http://goqnotes.com/5095/spring-awakening-proves-why-its-broadways-best-musical/

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?

If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).

You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.

2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!

3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).

4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?

The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.

5. Can I Get Discounts?

From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!

6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
